The biggest mistake we make as designers is to start with a solution.

We like to solve problems.

BUT WAIT! If we want to be effective, we need to step back and discover the solution by first understanding the problem.

When someone comes to you and says, “We need a training program.”, your first question should be, “WHAT is the PROBLEM!”

First we need to really understand the problem, then the people having the problem, then the environment in which the ¬†problem exists. All through this, we MUST know how to measure the problem and what the world will look like when the solution is there… how do we measure progress toward success?

 

THEN, and only then, can we begin to look at possible solutions.
